During the month of June 2011 a team of workers spent 15 days at the Payne River Fishing Camp building a new guest meeting lounge. This crew also made significant improvements to the four guest cabins and the main lodge.
The new 18’ x 36’ lodge was built for our guests needs in mind. It has quickly become the place to gather after a day on the water to exchange fishing experiences, tie flies and share a drink or two before dinner. The four guest cabins have been upgraded and each cabin now has its own toilet and running water. New flooring was also installed in the four guest cabins and the main lodge. The new facilities are designed to enable corporate groups to conduct business meetings and enjoy an extraordinary Arctic Char fishing experience way above the tree line.

In 2012, for some unknown reason, anglers caught more Arctic Char in the 15 pound range. In the past 20 years, most of heavier Arctic Char caught by our guests would weigh in the 12 to 14 lb range and 10 pound fish were common. Fish weighing over 15 pounds were readily taking flies and giving anglers great battles as they bent rods in two and ripped off back line. During our trip Donald Thom caught an 18 pound fish on the last day which won top honors in the biggest fish category. Gilles Charron had caught a 16 pounder mid way during the trip and was in good position to win the “biggest fish” award with his guide Eric. The official judges decided that both anglers and their guides deserved recognition for their angling performances. Both teams were declared winners! Guests, guides and camp staff all joined together to celebrate the incredible week of angling and Carole’s awesome meals!
